I woke up this morning to one of those kudos emails and spotted a new bookmark on one of my fics for Harper Fox's Brothers of the Wild North Sea. There are two whole fics in that fandom tag on AO3 and they are mine! I have to laugh at myself a bit for how this M/M romance novel absolutely knocked me flat with how much I loved it. One of these days when I have time and creative energy to spare, I'd like to get back to writing fic and put more out there for this little book that stole my heart in Isolation Autumn 2020.

I think I was watching The Last Kingdom prior to reading the book and getting into a duet 5e TTRPG called Beowulf: Age of Heroes at the time. If I remember correctly, my Kindle recommendations basically were like, "oh, so you've read over 10 Saxon Stories novels by Bernard Cornwell plus a bunch of gay novels, so what about this book?" I checked the reviews and saw a lot of "this is a hidden gem!" so gave it a shot and... well... I do have a tag for the meltdown. XD

ANYWAY, it occurred to me that I used to put masterposts on here for my fic, or I at least was trying to do so, and fell behind! It's 2022 now!!! Regrettably, the formatting is weird on the other posts, but hopefully I can manage to keep this looking okay... Here are the Fenrir fics!

1) far from a hearth-fire - Caius/Fenrir, Fenrir introspection, as a tag says "A Man Lies Awake at Night and Thinks of Many Things" [AO3]

A few weeks after the Torleik's raid on Fara monastery, Fenrir lies awake at night and processes his new situation.

All he could do was rest and watch and wait.

2) the far away shore - Caius/Fenrir is the ship but this is mostly Fenrir & OFC because here's to Gay Solidarity and Fenrir having at least one Danish friend [AO3]

I cannot believe I forgot to talk about the sweetest comment I got recently on cast some light and you'll be all right. It's incredibly validating to receive fic comments and kudos when I haven't written and posted fic since... well, shit, November 2020, apparently.

I've been in such a different place creatively-- so much of my creative energy is going toward the AKB Campaign. I write scenery snippets and dreams for my players and then I've gotten into the habit of cleaning up my prep notes into narrative formats. My players have been enjoying reading them and we talk about the campaign a lot, so it feels valuable as a creative exercise, even if the audience is just a handful of close friends instead of /large handwaving gesture toward Fandom. But I do miss writing fic. It's like flexing a different muscle.

That comment thread for cast some light though is particularly lovely because it brings up a whole level of Cassian's characterization that I've privately held close to my heart and not talked about too much. My own identity is sometimes a complicated ball of grey areas, but I have wondered for years if I have grey-ace / demisexual tendencies... and I do feel that my portrayal of Cassian in that 'verse holds space for that. It's always nice to have readers point out my quiet little markers, especially in a 'verse that is primarily PWP / Porn with Feelings.

Anyway, it's also really cool and validating to have a reader say that they've carried my portrayal of Jyn/Cassian with them for years. There's a pressure, I think, to write a lot of content constantly in order to be ~relevant within a fandom and not fall into obscurity... I've made relative peace with letting go of that now because I just-- can't do it all right now. (Work full-time on three projects, run a new community theatre committee, participate onstage and offstage with productions, run a campaign, make time for family and friends, AND write fic? Too many hats, too many spinning plates.)

It's such a nice feeling though to know that someone out there is reading what I wrote and finding value in it.

Hello, it is SOMEHOW January 2022 and I am going to come back to posting on here because it occurred to me that I miss journal style posting and even if I just do a Weekly Friday Roundup of Nice Things Going On, maybe that will be fun.

This is also a place where I can talk about my Akallabêth Campaign Reboot (first campaign ended in September 2020) without any of my current players seeing my Plans! So much creative energy is going to being an Adventures in Middle-earth Loremaster and my new crew is really lovely and has bought into the setting in a way that brings me an immeasurable amount of joy.

Anyway, anyway, hello out there in the ether of Dreamwidth, I'm determined to have a quiet little presence on here again this year.

This is crossposted from tumblr and Pillowfort, though I think I am planning on making this my main non-tumblr blog home since I have a new laptop and the RTE actually functions with this one! For some reason, my old laptop never wanted to load the RTE properly and lemme tell you, it is HIGHLY irritating trying to work the HTML in the little bits of free time I've been able to spare and making a post on mobile... hasn't been the most convenient thing either. But I am planning on making more of an effort to be more active on here (and backing up on Pillowfort, probably) because I miss fandom and it would be nice to have a journal to record fic thoughts and D&D thoughts and the like without shouting it into the void of tumblr. That can certainly be useful for small posts, I think, but I really do appreciate the ability to friends-lock posts and have functional readmore cuts.

Anyway, enough about that! I wrote and posted a new fic for the first time since, uhhhh, October 2018! It was for the Rebelcaptain May 4 Fic Exchange. It was my second year participating and was an interesting process... I spent a lot of time writing beginnings of things and then opening new, clean documents to start something completely different. Finally, I was able to complete something related to the prompt I received!

The prompt was "reasons to celebrate, scars, reunion fic; she hung on so tightly she left her mark in you" -- and I think I got a decent amount of that in... certainly "scars" and "reunion fic". My original thought was to have something with Cassian's POV reflecting on how Jyn's presence in his life has changed him, but the fic I wrote instead has some different ideas. I'm interested in how the past affects the present, how we carry people and events with us. So somewhere in there I tried to convey internal marks and scars, good and-- not bad, just haunting.

Anyway anyway, musing aside, here's the fic:

Tauriel comes to Lothlórien.

It's been a long time since I've worked on the fic and I have been sitting on about 1k words of Tauriel's POV for a start to chapter two. I like what I've written and I'd like to get back to it. My fandom energy has felt directionless for a number of reasons, so I'm half-hopeful it turns to this again soon even though feedback has been historically sparse. We'll see! I have an outline! We'll see!!!

One morning I woke up from a dream and suddenly shipped Cassian/Melshi in this very specific Friendly Exes way and now I have 1k's worth of ficlets. The fic I should actually be writing is longer and in Melshi's POV and will actually feature Cassian/Melshi flashback content if I can get my shit together soon.

I did one of these on Pillowfort but since that site is still a fledgling one, I have a feeling my blogging presence will be more consistent around here. I am planning on crossposting to both for awhile should I have the energy and time on my personal computer!

It's strange to be back to this format after so long away from LJ. I moved onto tumblr in 2011 and out of LJ... maybe in 2013? My old LJ is long since deleted and I'm here largely in response to the Tumblr Exodus.

Anyway, hi. I'm Kate or Brynn, I have no preference between the two, but please don't call me a girl/lady/woman, as I am a genderqueer lesbian with a complicated relationship to Womanhood. I'll probably make musing friendslocked posts about it at some point, but my identity is not up for debate and I'd appreciate it being respected. I'm mostly a Tolkien Legendarium and Star Wars person, but as of this post, recent times have seen me drowning in the ocean of feelings that is Black Sails, so keep an eye out for fic about that, I'm sure.

Other things: I'm occasionally an actor (mostly Shakespeare in the summers), I'm a Loremaster/DM for Adventures in Middle Earth (LotR 5E D&D), 4+ years type one diabetic, and an absolute cat person. My cat's name is Gus, aka Old Man Gus, and he is 18 and is currently draped across my arms which is making typing a bit of a struggle.

I'm off to go transfer over some masterposts now and settle back into having an online journal like this.
